If you are encountering an issue with images in Lucid, following the steps included in this article often resolves the issue. Read on for troubleshooting tips you can try on your own before contacting the support team.

How to add and customize images

If you are not experiencing performance issues with images and want instructions on how to add and customize them, check out the following articles:

Try basic troubleshooting first

Most problems with images are related to browser or network issues. Check out our Basic troubleshooting article for more information. In most cases, the steps outlined in this article will resolve the problem you are having.

Identify the issue

If basic troubleshooting did not solve the problem, use this section to identify the specific issue you are having with images in Lucid. Under each of the common issues below is a list of troubleshooting steps that usually resolve the issue. Click the troubleshooting step for more detail.

Image upload failed

If you receive an error that your image upload failed, try these troubleshooting options:

Image is blurry or looks different

If your image uploads to Lucid but looks blurry or distorted, try these troubleshooting options:

Troubleshooting steps

Adjust image file size

File is too big
If your image fails to upload, check the size of the image to make sure it is under that limit. If the image is too big, reduce the file size, then try uploading again. Lucid has the following upload limits:

  • Image files (JPG, PNG, etc.): 10 MB
    • Images also have a maximum size of 4,000 x 4,000 pixels
  • GIFs: 5 MB
  • PSDs files: 30 MB
  • PDFs: 10 MB

File is too small
If your image file is too small, it may appear blurry when resized in Lucid. If possible, find or export a larger version of the image file from its original source.

Manage storage space

If you are unable to upload an image, your storage may be full. Check your storage by following these steps:

  1. Click your profile image or initials in the top-right corner of your Lucid account.
  2. Select Account Settings.

Your storage usage is located at the bottom-left of the page, under the navigation menu. Hover your cursor over each of the colored sections to see what that portion of the storage represents.

If your storage is full, try the following options to clean up space before attempting the upload again.

  • Delete old Lucid documents you no longer need.
  • Delete unnecessary images from your Lucid documents.
  • Empty your trash.

After following these steps, if you still need more storage you can upgrade your Lucid account to a plan with more storage space.

Try another upload method

There are multiple ways to add images to a Lucid document. If your upload fails or appears incorrectly with one method, try another option.

Add a PNG or JPG
You can add a PNG or JPG to a Lucid document by:

  • Copying the image from its source and pasting it into Lucid
  • Uploading the image from your device
  • Dragging the image from its source onto the Lucid canvas

Add an SVG
You can add an SVG to a Lucid document by:

  • Copying the image from its source and pasting it into Lucid
  • Uploading the image from your device
  • Dragging the image from its source onto the Lucid canvas
  • Using Lucidchart’s import shape functionality

FAQ

What image file types can I upload into Lucid documents?
Lucid supports image uploads from the following file types: JPG, PNG, SVG, PDF, GIF, and PSD.

Can I crop an image into a specific shape?
Yes. For steps on how to crop images into a shape in Lucidchart, check out this community post.

It is not possible to crop an image into a different shape in Lucidspark. As a workaround, you can follow the steps to do so in Lucidchart, then copy the image and paste it into a Lucidspark board.

Can I add my own images to an org chart?
Yes. For detailed steps, check out our Create an org chart article.

How can I add a PDF to my document as an image instead of a link?
To view a PDF as an image in Lucid, you have two options:

  • After you upload a PDF, click the embedded link tile that appears on the canvas. Selectextract-thumbnails-in-lucid.pngthe Extract Thumbnails icon from the Context panel in Lucidchart or the Context Toolbar in Lucidspark to extract images of each page of your PDF.
  • Select Image instead of PDF from the “Insert” menu in Lucidchart or Lucidspark when uploading your file. This only inserts the first page of the PDF.

If you are a user in the FedRAMP environment, the first bullet point explained above is not available—you will not see an embedded link or extract thumbnails option. You can, however, insert an image of the first page of a PDF as explained in the second bullet point.
