Before importing an org chart into Lucidchart, ensure your data is properly formatted.

Plan availability: Free, Individual, Team, and Enterprise.
  • Available on FedRAMP accounts.
    • If you are a FedRAMP user, you can import from Excel or CSV. However, importing from Google Sheets and BambooHR is not available.
  • Read the Lucid Plans article for more information about what is available on your account or the Upgrade your Lucid account article for instructions to upgrade.

Format org chart data

Before importing data, it is essential your table meets these three requirements:

  • Every column of the table has a header.
  • Every employee has a supervisor indicated either by name or an employee ID.
  • Every supervisor is listed as an employee. Even the CEO needs to be listed as an employee with a blank corresponding supervisor cell.

Tip: Limit datasets to a maximum of 2,000 rows for optimal performance.

Here’s an example using a Google Sheet:

In this example, we have indicated supervisors by a Supervisor ID. The Supervisor ID corresponds to their Employee ID number in column A.

If you choose to add additional details to your data source, it may look something like this:

To work with this sample yourself, click here to download the CSV file. You can view the CSV on your device or upload the file to Google Drive to open it in Google Sheets.
