Manage team workload with enhanced planning

Set up your workspace

There are a few steps you need to take before you can begin enhanced planning:

1. Add a Dynamic Table or Timeline to the board.
2. Add one or more Lucid Cards to the Dynamic Table or Timeline.
3. If you plan to use capacity planning, select Lucid Card(s) and click the Edit details icon to add a story point estimate.

Access enhanced planning

1. Select a Dynamic Table or Timeline on your board.
2. Click Planning from the options at the top of the Dynamic Table or Timeline.
   • Depending on the size of your Dynamic Table or Timeline, this may appear as the Planning icon.

From here, you have access to the following enhanced planning features:

• Draft mode: Customize your Dynamic Table or Timeline in Lucid without impacting your integration. Later, pull or push changes when you’re ready.
• Create new scenario: Duplicate your selected Dynamic Table or Timeline in draft mode, so that you can customize and compare multiple scenarios to reach the ideal state.
• Capacity planning: Plan team workload using storypoint capacities.

Use draft mode

Use draft mode to customize your Dynamic Table or Timeline within Lucid without impacting your integration, and later pulling or pushing desired changes when you’re ready. To turn on draft mode, follow these steps:

1. Select a Dynamic Table or Timeline on your board.
2. Click Planning from the options at the top of the Dynamic Table or Timeline.
   • Depending on the size of your Dynamic Table or Timeline, this may appear as the Planning icon.
3. Toggle on "Draft mode".

Once in draft mode, you can restructure your Dynamic Table or Timeline to try out different formats, adjust how Lucid Cards are organized, and explore with capacity planning if you choose to enable it—all without pushing changes to your work management platform.

When you’re finished using draft mode and are ready to apply changes and re-enable the two-way sync with your Lucid Cards integration, follow these steps:

1. Select a Dynamic Table or Timeline on your board.
2. Click Planning from the options at the top of the Dynamic Table or Timeline.
   • Depending on the size of your Dynamic Table or Timeline, this may appear as the Planning icon.
3. Under the “Draft mode” toggle, click Push changes.
4. If changes have been made in the work management platform (Jira, Azure DevOps, etc.) while you were drafting, you will see an “Updates available” section with the option to select Pull changes.

Create and compare multiple scenarios

Use multiple scenarios to duplicate your selected Dynamic Table or Timeline in draft mode so you can customize and compare multiple scenarios to reach the ideal state. To create a new scenario, follow these steps:

1. Select a Dynamic Table or Timeline on your board.
2. Click Planning from the options at the top of the Dynamic Table or Timeline.
   • Depending on the size of your Dynamic Table or Timeline, this may appear as the Planning icon.
3. Click + Create new scenario.

This creates a duplicate of your Dynamic Table or Timeline that will automatically be in draft mode. You can now leverage the value of draft mode, while leaving your original Dynamic Table or Timeline unchanged in the meantime for comparison purposes later on. You can repeat the steps to create as many scenarios as you’d like.

Enable capacity planning

Use capacity planning to plan team workload using story point capacities. To enable capacity planning, follow these steps:

1. Select a Dynamic Table or Timeline on your board.
2. Click Planning from the options at the top of the Dynamic Table or Timeline.
   • Depending on the size of your Dynamic Table or Timeline, this may appear as the Planning icon.
3. Toggle on "Capacity planning".
4. Optionally, toggle on "Draft mode".
   • This will pause two-way sync with any Lucid Cards integration you’re using so that you can customize your capacity planning in Lucid only before applying changes.

A capacity bar can be viewed at the top of each column in your Dynamic Table or Timeline.

Set capacity

Once you’ve enabled capacity planning, set a capacity for each column by following these steps:

1. Click Set capacity under the capacity bar at the top of each column.
2. Use the plus and minus buttons to adjust the capacity, or type a number into the box.
3. Repeat these steps for all columns or click Apply to all to set the same capacity for all columns.

You can adjust the capacity at any time by clicking it and repeating step 2 above.

In the example below, each column in this Dynamic Table represents a different team. Each team has a capacity of seven story points. The capacity bar at the top of each column makes it easy to see that Team 2 is above capacity with the tasks they currently have planned for the next sprint, but Team 1 has some bandwidth. With capacity planning, teams can rebalance workloads by moving tasks between teams to ensure everyone is working within their capacity.
