Generate a diagram in Lucidchart

Generating a diagram using Lucid’s Collaborative AI is currently in beta.

To generate a diagram in Lucidchart based on a text description:

Open a Lucidchart document.
Select the Generate diagram icon from the Primary Toolbar to the far-left of the workspace.
Use the dropdown above the text-entry box to select a specific diagram type such as basic flowchart, sequence diagram, or class diagram.
In the text-entry box, type a detailed description of the diagram you want to generate.
- Click the attach file icon to attach an image, PDF, or TXT file that the AI can reference in addition to your prompt. Check out this post in the Lucid Community for specific examples of attaching files to generate more intelligent diagrams.
- Toggle on "Enhance Prompt" to automatically have the prompt optimized for accuracy and level of detail.
Click Generate.

The AI-generated diagram will appear on the canvas.

Create a preset for future AI prompts

Create a preset to quickly apply your preferred settings to future prompts—like diagram type, shape library, creativity level, orientation, and custom rules—to ensure consistency and efficiency in future AI-generated diagrams.

To create a new preset, follow these steps:

Click the Preset icon to the right of the diagram type dropdown in the "Generate diagram" panel.
Type a name for the preset in the textbox.
Use the dropdowns to select diagram type, preferred shape library, and creativity level.
- Creativity level controls how much flexibility the AI has when interpreting your prompt. Select Default for more precise and structured outputs, and High to allow more flexibility and experimentation.
Select whether you want the diagram to be oriented vertically or horizontally.
Add any additional instructions in the textbox under “Custom rules” as shown in the example below.
Click Save as preset.

Use a preset

To use a default preset or a preset you've created, follow these steps:

Click the diagram type dropdown from the top of the "Generate diagram" panel.
Select the preset you want to use.
- The "Custom presets" section contains presets you’ve created.
- The "Default presets" section contains Lucid-provided presets.
Type a detailed description of the diagram you want to generate.
- You don’t need to include any parameters already defined in the preset, such as diagram type, which shape library to use, and diagram orientation.
Click Generate.

The AI-generated diagram will appear on the canvas.

Edit a generated diagram with AI

Add to or edit a prompt

After your diagram has been generated, you have the option to provide further information to iterate on the first version. To do this:

In the box that appears after Lucidchart has generated the diagram, type a detailed description of any changes you want made to the diagram.
Click Update.
- Repeat these first two steps as many times as necessary.
- Click the three-dot menu to the right of each prompt to Edit or Delete it.
Click Finish in the top-right corner of the editing panel.

The diagram will appear on the canvas as editable shapes you can move and customize as needed.

Adjust the layout

Once your diagram has all the information based on the prompts you have provided, you can adjust it using Lucid’s assisted layout, which automatically aligns objects into an organized grid pattern. For more information about how to use assisted layout, check out this post in the Lucid Community.

How will you use my data?
Lucid is dedicated to upholding its commitments to you regarding the privacy, security, and safety of your data, including with any Collaborative AI features. Please see our Terms of Service and your Enterprise MSA, if applicable.

We do not use customer data to train models in a way that breaches the confidentiality of our customers' data. We do not use your prompt inputs to generate content for other customers based on your data. We do store documents for your use and any content on those documents are stored for your use as well.

As we expand our AI capabilities we will continue to do so in a way that does not breach the confidentiality of our customers' data.

Why don’t I see the Generate diagram icon in my Primary Toolbar?
If you don’t see the Generate diagram icon in your Primary Toolbar, this may be because your admin has disabled Collaborative AI for your account. Reach out to your Lucid admin for more information. If you are an admin, you control whether users have access to this feature. See our Lucid admin panel: Security settings article to learn more.
