Lucid AI basics

Currently, our AI capabilities are optimized for English only. Some functionality may not work as expected when used in another language.

Lucid AI is currently in beta.

Access Lucid AI

To access Lucid AI, follow these steps:

  1. Open a Lucid document.
  2. Select lucid-ai-icon.png the Lucid AI icon from the top of the Primary Toolbar on the left side of the page.

From this panel you can type a request into the text-entry box, click the microphone icon to enter a prompt using voice-to-text, or select one of the options below the text box.

To start a new chat after you’ve already sent a message to Lucid AI, select lucid-ai-new-chat-icon.png the New chat icon from the top-right corner of the Lucid AI panel and click New chat.

Lucid AI capabilities

Lucid AI can help expedite your work using many of Lucid’s features. Check out the chart below for details and example prompts.

Generate a diagram Create a flowchart, ERD, mind map, and other types of diagrams based on a text description or image file.

Generate a board Create a brainstorm board, project kickoff, and other types of boards based on a text description. "Generate a project retrospective board with columns for 'What went well,' 'What could go better,' and 'Action items'."
Ask questions Ask questions about content in the document. “What action items are included in this document?”
Brainstorm ideas Generate new ideas or generate similar ideas based on selected content.

“Brainstorm virtual team activity ideas for a team of 9 people.”

“Generate more ideas that are similar to the selected sticky notes.”

Conditional formatting Describe a conditional formatting rule to create it. “Make all employees who are located in Germany have a yellow fill color.”
Dynamic Tables, Lucid Cards, and Timelines Use Lucid AI to work with features like Lucid Cards, Dynamic Tables, and Timelines to keep your teams aligned. "Convert the selected sticky notes into Lucid Cards, adding fields for 'Owner' and 'Priority', then place them into a Dynamic Table.”
Edit a diagram Select an existing diagram, and prompt Lucid AI to make additions or edits. "Add an escalation path to the selected workflow."
Export a document Download a Lucid document as a PDF, PNG, JPEG, or SVG. ”Export the current page as a PDF.”
Find in-product features Use Lucid AI to search for any tool in your Lucidchart document. “Where is the Voting feature?”
Get product help Ask questions about the document or get help from the Lucid Help Center. “How do I add a layer to my document?”
Link data to a document Use AI prompts to generate data-linked shapes on the canvas. "Look at the selected shape on the canvas. Create data-linked shapes for the rest of the rows in the spreadsheet that was imported through the data linking panel.”
Lucid Cards for Jira Add Jira cards to a board. “Add Jira cards from the ‘2026 Capstone’ project that are assigned to me.”
Outline a diagram Generate a detailed text version of a diagram. “Outline the selected diagram.”
Sort sticky notes Sort sticky notes into AI-generated categories. “Sort the selected sticky notes into categories.”
Summarize content Summarize content in the document.

“Summarize this document.”

“Summarize the selected content.”

Enhance Lucid AI for specific use cases

Plan mode

Before entering a prompt into Lucid AI, you have the option to enable Plan mode. Plan mode is designed to fine-tune and coordinate complex, vague, or large-scale requests. When enabled, Lucid AI will ask questions before making changes to your document.

Enable Plan mode by following these steps from the Lucid AI panel:

  1. Click the plus sign icon in the bottom-left corner of the text box.
  2. Select Plan mode.

The plan-mode-icon-in-lucid-ai-panel.png Plan mode icon will appear, indicating that it is enabled. Click the X next to the icon to disable it.

After you enter a prompt, Lucid AI will respond with a tentative plan for how to proceed. Click Accept plan to continue or Make changes if you need to clarify or provide more details.

Once you’ve accepted a plan, Lucid AI will generate an initial draft or ask follow-up questions as needed.

Process Agent

Lucid AI’s Process Agent is an interactive tool designed to help you build process diagrams and refine them through intelligent, clarifying questions. For more information, check out our Use the Process Agent to build complex diagrams faster with Lucid AI article.

Cloud Agent

With Lucid AI’s Cloud Agent (beta) functionality, you can use Lucid AI to generate targeted cloud infrastructure diagrams directly inside Lucidchart. For more information, check out our Use the Cloud Agent to build architecture diagrams in Lucidchart with Lucid AI article.

Process Capture

With Lucid AI’s Process Capture, you can generate diagrams from a screen recording. You can also review your recording and redact sensitive information before the diagram is generated. For admins: Enable or disable Lucid AI

Admins on Team and Enterprise accounts can control whether or not to give users on their account access to AI features.

To enable or disable Lucid AI for your account, follow these steps:

  1. Select Admin from the navigation menu on the left side of the Lucid Home Page.
  2. Click Security from the navigation menu on the left side of the page.
  3. Select AI controls from the options that appear below "Security".
  4. Under "Enable Lucid AI", click the toggle off to disable it.
    • If Lucid AI has already been disabled, click the toggle on to enable it.
  5. Click Save changes in the top-right corner.

FAQ

How will you use my data?
Lucid is dedicated to upholding its commitments to you regarding the privacy, security, and safety of your data, including with any AI features. Please see our Terms of Service and your Enterprise MSA, if applicable. 

We do not use customer data to train models in a way that breaches the confidentiality of our customers' data. We do not use your prompt inputs to generate content for other customers based on your data. We do store documents for your use and any content on those documents are stored for your use as well. 

As we expand our AI capabilities we will continue to do so in a way that does not breach the confidentiality of our customers' data.

Why don’t I see the Lucid AI icon in my Primary Toolbar?
If you don’t see lucid-ai-icon.png the Lucid AI icon in your Primary Toolbar, this may be because your admin has disabled AI features for your account. Reach out to your Lucid admin for more information. If you are an admin, you control whether users have access to this feature.
