Install the Lucid for Slack integration
The Slack integration can be installed by a user for their own account or it can be installed by a Lucid admin for their entire account. The second option allows Slack Org Owners and Org Admins to connect, view, and manage apps for all workspaces in an Enterprise Grid. To learn more about the admin set up for this integration, refer to the For admins: Enable the Slack integration for Lucidchart and Lucidspark article.
If you are a user setting up the Slack integration for your own account, follow these steps:
- Log in to your Lucid account, and log into the Slack account you would like to connect to.
- Click your profile image or initials in the top-right corner of your Lucid account.
- Select Account Settings.
- Click Apps & Integrations from the left-hand menu.
- Choose either the Lucidchart or Lucidspark tab at the top of the page to locate the Slack integration for that product.
- Find Slack in your list of integrations and select Add to Slack.
-
Click Allow to grant permissions to your Lucidchart or Lucidspark account. Refer to the Permission uses section for a breakdown of the permissions being requested.
You’ll be redirected to Slack where the Lucidchart or Lucidspark app opens.
Use the Slack integration in Lucid
Once you’ve installed or updated your Slack integration, you’ll automatically receive Slack notifications about new comments, shares, and document requests.
You can share a link directly in Slack. When you do, you’ll see a thumbnail preview of the document and the link will be converted into a document that you can search for and access in Slack.
Note: When updates are made to the Slack integration, you may be prompted to accept new permissions or request admin approval to upgrade to the newest version of the integration. Follow the prompts to review permissions or request that your Slack workspace admin approve the app.
Manage document permissions in Slack
Save time by managing document permissions directly in Slack. Here’s how:
- Paste a document link in Slack.
- Send as a message.
- You will be prompted to select the right level of access (view, comment, edit, or edit and share access).
Use Slack shortcuts
To create a new Lucidchart document or Lucidspark board from Slack:
-
Type “/lucidchart” or “/lucidspark” into your message field.
- Press Enter to send.
- In the pop up window, you can add a title and message.
- Click Create.
- Select Accept invitation.
Your Lucidchart document or Lucidspark board will open in a new tab.
Use AI in Slack to summarize a Lucid document
With the Lucid for Slack integration, you can generate a summary of any Lucidchart document or Lucidpark board with AI when you share the document in a public Slack channel. To do so, follow these steps:
- In a Lucid document, click Share in the top-right corner.
- Toggle on the shareable link.
- Set the document’s sharing permissions using the dropdown.
- Click Copy link.
- In Slack, paste the link into a channel or direct message.
- Press “Enter” on your keyboard to share the document.
- After you send the document link, a new message will appear in Slack with the option to summarize the document.
- Click Summarize Document or Summarize Board.
- This feature is not available in private channels or direct messages.
The summary appears underneath the document or board.
Note: Information produced by AI may be inaccurate, biased, misleading, inappropriate, offensive, or outdated. Always confirm results generated with AI.
Authenticate into Lucid via Slack
Once you’ve installed the Lucid for Slack integration, you can authenticate into your Lucid account via Slack by accepting an invitation to a document in Slack. If you are logged out of your Lucid account, click the invitation in Slack to automatically log in to your Lucid account.
Note: Admins have the ability to disable this sign in option. They can do so by disabling Slack as a Sign-on method in the Lucid admin panel. Find detailed steps in the Lucid admin panel: Security settings article.
Add team members in Lucid via Slack channels
Once you have the Lucid for Slack integration installed, you can search Slack channels when adding members to a team in Lucid. Check out the Use team hubs in Lucid to collaborate and stay organized article for instructions.
Permissions granted to Lucid
When you grant permission for Lucidchart or Lucidspark to access your Slack workspaces, you agree to allow Lucid to:
- Perform actions in your workspace: Required to make the /lucidchart and /lucidspark command work in your Slack instance.
- Perform actions in channels and conversations and Perform actions as you: Required to allow the “Post to Slack" button which sends an image of the diagram back to the Slack conversation.
- Perform actions in and view content and info about channels and conversations: Required to pull the names of the public channels and share diagrams directly into public Slack channels from Lucidchart's Share dialog. Also required to import members from public or private channels to add to teams in Lucid.
- View content and info about your workspace: Required to pull the names of the users on the account so we can autocomplete. If we do not autocomplete, the app cannot send a message.
FAQ
When sharing from Lucidchart or Lucidspark, can I share with private channels?
No. Only public channels are searchable when sharing from the Lucid share dialog in a Lucidchart or Lucidspark document. If you are adding members to a team in Lucid, however, you can search for private channels.
Can I share folders in Slack through the Lucid share dialog?
No. Only documents can be shared to Slack. However, as a workaround you could create a share link and paste that in Slack instead.
What do I do when I receive a server error when trying to install the integration?
If you receive a server error during installation, please try the installation again with a Chrome incognito window to make sure there is no browser interference.
What do I do if Lucid prompts me to update the Slack integration?
When updates are made to the Slack integration, you may be prompted to take one of the two following actions:
- Follow the prompts to review and accept modified permissions.
- Request admin approval for an update from your Slack workspace admin. This requires a user to submit the app for approval from Lucid, including an optional message to the admin. Then, the admin reviews all scopes and can approve the app for workspace from Slack. Once the workspace admin has approved the app, all users on the account can install or update the integration without requiring additional approval.
