There are multiple ways to transfer documents between Lucid accounts. See below to find the best option for you. You can use one of the methods below to transfer files between accounts. If you made a new Lucid account, you can use the "Transfer via Backup and Restore" method.

Plan availability: Free, Individual, Team, and Enterprise.

Transfer document ownership

Transfer individual documents

Before the current document owner can transfer ownership to a collaborator, the following things need to be true:

  • The document needs to be shared with the person who is to become the new owner.
  • The person who is to become the new owner needs to have accepted the share invite and accessed the document.
  • The document cannot be in a shared folder.

Once your collaborator has accepted the document invite, follow these steps to make them the new owner:

  1. Click Share in the top-right corner of the document you want to transfer ownership of.
    • You can also access the Share panel from the Lucid Home Page by clicking the three-dot menu on a document, hovering your cursor over "Share", then selecting Share.
  2. Select Manage in the Collaborators section.
  3. Click the sharing permissions icon for the person you would like to transfer ownership to.
  4. Select Make owner.
    • The "Make owner" option will not appear for a collaborator until they have accepted your document share invite.
  5. In the confirmation window that appears, select whether or not you would like to remain as a collaborator.
  6. Click Make owner.

The new owner will receive a notification that they are now the owner of the document or board.

Learn more: Admins on Enterprise accounts can restrict the ability to transfer ownership of individual documents. For more information, check out our Lucid admin panel: Security settings article.

Transfer documents in bulk

If you are an account owner or document admin of an Enterprise account, you can bulk transfer documents and boards from one user on your account to another from the admin panel. You can also change the location of documents by moving them to a team folder. To learn more about these bulk transfer options, refer to our Lucid admin panel: Compliance settings article

Transfer documents via backup/restore  premium-tag.png

Backup and restore is a premium feature offered on Individual, Team, and Enterprise accounts. See the Upgrade your Lucid account article for instructions to upgrade.

To transfer documents to a different account via backup/restore:

  1. From the Lucid Home Page, click your profile image or initials and select Account settings.
  2. Select Document Settings from the menu to the left.
  3. Under "Backup" select Download.
  4. From the options, select which folders you want to download by checking the corresponding boxes.

  5. Click Start download.
    • An .laf file will download to your device. This file type is unique to Lucid and cannot be opened with any other software.
  6. In a different Lucid account, click the profile image or initials and select Account settings.
  7. Select Document Settings from the menu to the left.
  8. Under "Restore", click Choose file and select the .laf file from your device.
    • If the file is too large, a notification will appear prompting you to click Download to break the file into multiple smaller files. After these have been downloaded to your device, you can upload them one by one using the steps in this section.
  9. Click Restore from backup.

You will see a folder on your Documents page called "restore" with the date.

Notes:

  • Transferring via backup/restore gives the new account ownership of the documents. However, sharing rights are not transferred. Users will need to reshare the documents, as needed.
  • If you transfer Lucid files created with features from a premium Lucid subscription to an account with a lower level or no premium Lucid subscription, the documents will remain view-only, and you won’t be able to edit them.

Tip: When transferring documents from one account to another using backup and restore, do not delete the original account until you have verified that you can see the documents in the new account.

Delete a user and transfer their files

In order to delete a user from your account and transfer their files to another user on the account, follow the steps outlined in the Delete a user section of our Lucid admin panel: User management article.

Note: You must be an account owner, account admin, or organizational group admin (Enterprise only) to delete a user from a team. You can only designate one user to receive all of the transferred documents. When an organizational group admin deletes a user and transfers their documents, the user they are transferring to must belong to the organizational group admin's group.

FAQ

What is an .laf file?
An .laf file is a file type specific to Lucid documents, created through Lucid's backup/restore functionality. It can only be used within Lucid to restore previously downloaded backups and cannot be opened elsewhere.

Can I transfer ownership of a shared folder?
No. You can only transfer ownership of individual Lucid documents.

Do document attributes carry over when a document is transferred?
When a document is transferred to a new account, attributes like classification and status will carry over if the receiving account uses the same Lucid default values (such as Draft, Complete, Private, or Confidential). If the document has custom attributes or labels (e.g., "Top Secret"), these will be stripped during the transfer, and the document will arrive with no classification applied.

In the document’s revision history, the names of default Lucid classifications will remain visible. However, any custom classifications will be replaced with "No Status" or "No Classification" instead of the original custom name.
