Create your migration plan

The first question to answer when creating a migration plan is which import methods will most effectively support the content of your boards. In some cases, you may need to use multiple methods. If one method does not support a type of content you want to import, you can use another import method that does.

For example, if you plan to edit your board after importing, it's best to use a vector PDF, copy and paste, or a combination of both methods. For content that doesn't require editing, you can import a static image. If you're only migrating sticky notes or cards, import a CSV file.

Import methods

There are a few different methods you can use to import your work from Miro into Lucidspark:

• Vector PDF
• Copy and paste
• Static image
• CSV file

Once you have identified the import method that best fits your needs, you can begin creating your migration plan.

Import capabilities

Certain content types can be imported via vector PDF but not by copy and paste—and vice versa. In such cases, a hybrid approach is the most effective. The table below summarizes which content types each method supports. Click a link in the header row to be taken to the steps for a particular method.

Standard Lucid product support is not available for advanced feature migration.

Steps to import

Board Import

With a Miro Enterprise account, you have the option to export a board as a vector PDF. This method allows for editing content after import. For optimal upload speed and quality, upload no more than 10 files at a time.

To import a vector PDF of a Miro board using Lucidspark’s Board Import tool, follow these steps:

1. In Miro, open the export menu and select Save as Image.
   • Note: don’t save as a PDF at this step.
2. Resize the frame to capture all the content you want to export.
3. In the export window, select Vector PDF.
4. Click Export.
5. In Lucid, select + New from the home page.
6. Click Import documents.
7. Drag a file into the indicated area or click to browse your local device.
   • If you choose to browse, you will need to click Open to import your file(s).

Once the file has successfully imported, you can open the new Lucidspark board in a new tab by clicking View document to the right of the file name. Your imported file can be found anytime in your Documents page. To close the import window, click Done.

Board import troubleshooting

If you receive an error on import, verify:

• Your Miro board is exported as a vector PDF. If you upload a non-vector PDF or image (JPEG, PNG, SVG) of your board, the import will fail.
• Each page of a multi-page board is exported as a separate file. Our import tool does not support multiple page PDFs.
• Your PDF does not exceed 400 MB. To resolve this issue, you can export multiple PDFs of the same board by selecting fewer elements when exporting your board.
  • Consider breaking down large Miro boards into smaller Breakout Boards in Lucid to improve overall performance.

Copy and paste

This import method allows for editing content after import. If you encounter issues with pasting content, ensure copy and paste is enabled for the Miro board you want to copy content from.

To copy and paste content from Miro into Lucidspark:

1. In a Miro board, highlight and copy all content you want to move to Lucidspark.
   • Keyboard shortcuts to copy: Ctrl+C (on PC) and Cmd+C (on Mac).
2. In a Lucidspark board, right-click and select Paste.
   • Keyboard shortcuts to paste: Ctrl+V (on PC) and Cmd+V (on Mac).

All supported content will appear on your Lucidspark board.

Static image

Inserting an image of your content in Miro ensures it appears exactly the same in Lucidspark. Images of content are static, so this method is best if you don’t need to edit content after import.

To add an image of content from Miro to a Lucidspark board:

1. In Miro, save your board as an image or PDF.
2. In a Lucidspark board, selectthe More menu icon in the upper-left corner.
3. From the menu, click Insert.
4. Click Image.
5. Select the image file from your computer to import into Lucidspark.
6. Click Open.

The image will now be on your Lucidspark board.

CSV file

Miro offers a data export option that allows you to export data as a CSV file. You can then import that file into Lucidspark as sticky notes or Lucid Cards.

To import a CSV file of your content from Miro into Lucidspark as sticky notes or Lucid Cards, follow these steps:

1. In Miro, export the data as a CSV.
2. In a Lucidspark board, selectthe More menu icon in the upper-left corner.
3. In the menu that appears, hover your cursor over Insert.
4. Hover your cursor over CSV.
5. Click Sticky Notes or Lucid Cards.
6. Select the CSV file to upload.

Depending on your selection, sticky notes or Lucid Cards will be created on your Lucidspark board for each line of text in your CSV file.

For best results, ensure your Miro board only contains the content you want to export before downloading. If your CSV file is already exported, we recommend reviewing the content included in the file prior to importing into Lucidspark. Both recommendations help ensure your resulting import displays the exact information you want.

API import

We provide an API endpoint for technical users to write code to access Board Import in order to import more quickly and efficiently. With API import, you can write code scripts to upload batches of 10 documents at a time until full import is complete. This method is best if you have a high volume of individual files to import.

FAQ

Why didn't my diagramming components migrate?
The migration tools cannot import content such as ERD, BPMN, or UML diagrams. In this case, we recommend hiring Lucid Professional Services. Click here to learn more and contact the team. If that is not an option for you, you can use the Universal Canvas to edit your document in Lucid and add advanced diagramming components.

How much manual adjustment will I need to do after a migration?
Expect to adjust about 20%-30% of the content from the migration. Not all text sizes and fonts will equal 1:1 from Miro to Lucid, but can be edited in Lucid after the migration.

What is the maximum file size I can import into Lucidspark?
The maximum size of a board that can be imported is 400MB. If you have a single board with a lot of content, we recommend exporting multiple PDFs of the board and importing those into Breakout Boards in Lucidspark.

Can I import a multi-page document using the PDF method?
The Lucidspark Board Import tool does not support multiple-page PDFs. If you have a document with more than one page to import, export multiple PDFs of the board and import them one at a time in Lucidspark. Once imported, copy and paste the content from separate boards into one Lucidspark board.

How do I import large documents into Lucidspark using the PDF method?

Can I preserve my Miro “Projects” structure in Lucidspark?
Yes. After import, all files appear in “My Documents” on the home page. From the documents page, you can move any documents into a team hub.

Can I use multiple methods to import my content into Lucidspark?
Yes. In fact, we encourage it! If one import method does not support a type of content you want to import, you can use another import method that does. For example, if you copy and paste the majority of your content, but need to include images, consider exporting the images using the PDF method and importing the images using Board Import.
