Create a table
Access the tables shape library
To add a table to a Lucidchart document, you will first need to enable the Tables shape library. To do so, follow these steps:
- Click the More shapes icon at the bottom of the Shape menu.
- The Shape menu is located on the left side of a document.
- You can also press the “M” key on your keyboard.
- In the "Shapes" tab, check the box next to the Tables shape library.
- Select Use Selected Shapes.
You can then add a table to your canvas by dragging it our of the shape library and dropping it onto the canvas.
Select table components
To select your entire table, click once on it. It will become highlighted and a Contextual Panel will open to the right where you can work with Advanced Options.
To select an individual cell in your table, select the table and then click on the cell. A dashed border will appear around the cell.
To select multiple cells, hold down Shift and click the first cell and last cell of a range. Hold down Ctrl (Command) to select multiple cells that are not next to each other.
Tip: When cells are selected, you can simply press Backspace or Delete keys and all content will be removed. You can also right-click on any cell and choose to clear an entire row or column. This will also delete any text styling applied to cells.
Add content to your table
Add content manually
To add content to your table manually, double-click into a cell and type. You can use tab to navigate to the next cell.
Add content by copy and pasting a spreadsheet
To add content from a spreadsheet, follow these steps:
- Highlight data in an existing spreadsheet and copy it.
- Select your Lucidchart table.
- Select the entire table to paste the data into individual cells.
- Select an individual cell to paste all the data into one cell.
- Paste your data.
Content that is tab-separated (like a spreadsheet) will paste with a preserved cell structure. If you copy a 10x10 cell selection and paste it into a 3x3 Lucidchart table, the table will automatically resize.
Add, remove, and resize tables and rows
Add or remove columns and rows
Adjust your table's dimensions by toggling the "Columns" and "Rows" properties under Advanced Options in the Contextual Panel that will appear to the right of the editor whenever a table is selected.
Insert columns and rows
Add new columns using the corresponding icons under Advanced Options in the Contextual Panel. You can either use the count fields to toggle the number of rows and columns up and down, or you can click directly on the number and type your desired number of rows or columns. You can add a maximum of 100 columns and rows in a single table. Alternatively, you can use the "Insert" buttons to add a single row to the top or bottom and a single column to the left or right of your existing table.
Change row and column width and height
Hover over the border of a column or row and cursor will change to a double headed arrow. Click and drag the border in or out. Resize the entire table by clicking and dragging one of the corners of the table.
Note: As you increase row size, the table size will increase. As you change column size, the table size will stay the same. This means that other column sizes may change.
Style your table
Make changes to your table by using the Advanced Options menu within the Contextual Panel that appears to the right of the editor whenever a table is selected.
Add or remove column and rows: Hover over the Delete Column or Delete Row icon to preview the change. Review the highlighted row or column to confirm your data before you click delete to remove data.
Add Borders: Click the Borders drop-down and select the option that best suits your data.
Break up rows and columns with vertical or horizontal striping: Click the corresponding icon, and adjust the colors of the stripes using the palettes to the right.
Color: Select a table (or individual cells) and use the Properties bar to modify the fill color and line color of the selected area. To add color in alternating rows use the Advanced Options drop-down and select a “Striping” style. Once selected, you have the option to edit row colors.
Merge or un-merge cells: Select the cells you want to merge and click the corresponding icon.
Customize Text: Select a cell or multiple cells and work from the formatting bar to change the font and make text bolded, italicized, or underlined.
