Use this integration to embed existing Lucidchart diagrams into your Quip workspace or create new diagrams using the embedded Lucidchart editor.

This article walks through the Lucidchart functionality accessible within Quip. Additionally, existing hotspots, linked data, conditional formatting rules, and layers will function in Quip, but cannot be created in Quip. Revision History, Presentation Mode, ERD Import, AWS Import, UML Import, and Visio Import cannot be accessed in Quip—you must go to Lucidchart directly to use them.

Connect Quip to Lucidchart

After your admin has enabled the Lucidchart Live App for your Quip instance, you can connect your Quip account to your Lucidchart account. If you are a Quip admin and would like to enable Lucidchart on Quip or if you are a user who would like to request that your admin enable it, click here. Please note that if you are using the Quip Mac App, you will not be able to connect to your Lucidchart account. To connect, please use the web version of Quip.

To connect, follow these steps:

Log in to your Quip account.
Open an existing document or create a new one.
Enter the command @Lucidchart diagram and click Insert.
Click Connect to my account with Lucidchart or select one of the diagram options and then click Connect to Lucidchart.
- If you do not connect, you will not have access to your Lucidchart documents. You will still be able to create diagrams in Quip as an anonymous Lucidchart user, but your work will only be stored in Quip, not in Lucidchart.
Log in to Lucidchart (if you are not logged in already). If you do not have a Lucidchart account, follow the prompts to create one.
In the next window, click Grant Access to grant Quip access to your Lucidchart account

After this step, your Lucidchart account will be linked to your Quip account, and you will have full access to personal and account-owned documents directly from your Quip workspace.

Note: You can disconnect your Lucidchart account at any point by clicking Lucidchart Diagram, then Disconnect. Disconnecting will free up your Quip workspace to connect with a different Lucidchart account.

Edit a Lucidchart document from Quip

Once you have inserted a diagram into Quip using the @Lucidchart diagram command, you can edit the diagram directly from Quip using the embedded editor, which is a simplified version of the Lucidchart editor. If you want access to the full functionality of the Lucidchart editor, simply click Open in Lucidchart to open your document in Lucidchart.

Access shapes

On the left of the embedded editor is the toolbox, which contains your shape libraries.

You can open and close the toolbox by clicking

the shapes icon in the top left. Standard, flowchart, and geometric shapes will display by default, but you can easily enable more complex shape libraries by clicking + More Shapes and checking the box next to your desired library. When you are done adding new libraries, click Done.

Rearrange your shape libraries by dragging and dropping them, minimize or expand them by clicking on the triangle to the left of their names, and remove them by clicking the X to the right.

Diagramming basics

Add an object

To add an object to your diagram, drag and drop it from the toolbox onto the canvas. To add text to an object, double click on it and start typing.

Resize or rotate an object

When an object is selected, you can resize it by dragging the handles on its borders and rotate it by dragging the curved arrow icon in the object’s top left corner.

Add a line to an object

Add a connection line to an object by clicking on one of the red circles that appear around the object’s sides. After releasing the cursor, you will automatically be prompted to add a second object to the end of the connection line. If you do not want to add a second object, simply click anywhere on the canvas.

Edit and style your diagram

Underneath the menu options is the properties bar, which will allow you to edit specific aspects of your diagram.

Undo or redo your last action by clicking the arrows.
Resize and style your text.
Change the color of lines and objects
Format lines

To add a new page to your document, click the plus sign at the bottom of the editor. Zoom in and out of your diagram with the zoom bar at the bottom-right.

Add comments

You can add comments to objects and documents in Quip. Please note that when you add comments to the embedded editor, you will not be able to view these comments in Lucidchart. Similarly, any comments that you add to documents in the Lucidchart editor will not be visible in Quip.

To add a comment to an object:

Right-click on an object.
Select Add Comment.
Type your comment.
Click Send.

You can also add comments to entire documents by clicking on the top left of the editor.

The object will be flagged with ; click this icon to view the comment, and click Archive to remove it or Close to escape from the comment view.

FAQ

Why can I not view inserted Lucidchart diagrams (blank frame)?
This is often due to 3rd party cookies being disabled on your browser. Would you mind enabling 3rd party cookies and then trying again? Please take a look at our Enabling Third Party Cookies article

Why aren’t my images appearing in my inserted org chart?
Images that were inserted in Lucidchart using URLs will not be able to display in Quip. Please upload the images to Lucidchart directly and then they will be able to display in Quip.
