Publish or embed a Lucid document

Written by:  Morgan T

Share a Lucidchart document, Lucidspark board, or Lucidscale document with anyone on the web by publishing it to a unique webpage or permanent PDF link, or embedding it into your own webpage. Unlike static exported versions of documents, published documents stay up to date with the latest changes.

Plan availability: Free, Individual, Team, and Enterprise.
  • Available on FedRAMP accounts.
    • If you are a FedRAMP user, this feature can only be used if an admin has enabled it. To learn more, see our FedRAMP overview article linked in the bullet point above.
  • Read the Lucid Plans article for more information about what is available on your account or the Upgrade your Lucid account article for instructions to upgrade.

Publish a document

To publish a Lucid document, follow these steps:

  1. Open more-menu-icon the More menu from the top-left of the canvas.
  2. From the dropdown, click Publish.

  3. Select a publishing type from the dropdown (URL, PDF, or image).

  4. If you have selected to publish your document as an image file, choose your desired format and content quality.
  5. Click Generate Link, Publish Page, or Publish Selection to generate a URL or image file of the published document.

Click the paperclip to copy the link.

If you want to publish a selection of a Lucidchart page, click “Area Selection” from the drop down menu, click Publish Selection, close out of the Publishing dialog, then click and drag your cursor around the area you want to publish. When you return to the dialog, the area selection will appear as a published link.

Note: You can't publish a document that has sticky note authors enabled.

In Lucidchart and Lucidscale, you can add a password to enhance security. Others trying to access a password protected document will not only need the specific URL, but the password as well. This feature is not available in Lucidspark and is only available to Team and Enterprise accounts. See the Upgrade your Lucid account article for instructions to upgrade.

After publishing your document with a URL, follow these steps to add a password:

  1. Open more-menu-icon the More menu from the top-left of the canvas.
  2. Select Publish.
  3. From the dropdown, select Full Document (URL).
  4. Check the box next to “Require Password”.
  5. Enter a password.
  6. Click Generate Link.

Users who navigate to the generated URL will be required to enter the password you set before viewing the document.

Embed a document

Embed a document in a web page

To embed a Lucidchart or Lucidscale document in a website, blog, or wiki, follow these steps:

  1. Open more-menu-icon the More menu from the top-left of the canvas.
    • In Lucidchart, after opening the More menu, hover your cursor over “Share”.
  2. From the dropdown, select Embed.

  3. From the dropdown in the pop up window, select the size of your embed frame or create a custom size.

  4. Click Activate Embed Code.
  5. Copy the HTML snippet and paste it into the code of your web page.
    • This code can be used with a normal HTML img src tag.

If you decide to deactivate the embed code, you can do so by clicking Deactivate under the box containing the HTML snippet.

Note: Activating an embed code will disable password protection on a published document.

Interact with an embedded document

You can preview the experience of someone viewing your embedded document by clicking View Preview in the embed dialog after you have activated your code.

An embedded Lucidchart document will contain the following features:

  • Open in Lucidchart
  • View in full-screen mode
  • Show notes, Show hotspots, Use WebGL
  • Toggle pages in tab, thumbnail, and list mode
  • Explore document frame
  • Zoom in/out of document
  • Interact with actions and layers

An embedded Lucidscale document will contain the following features:

  • Open with Lucidscale
  • View in full-screen mode
  • Zoom in/out of document

Security of published documents

All published documents created by users are not indexed by search engines because we disallow crawling by using the robots exclusion standard (robots.txt), so Google and other search engines are unable to crawl your published Lucid documents.

For additional security, we recommend password protecting your shared and published documents. Instructions to set up a password for your document can be found in the "Password protect a published document" section of this article.

Unpublish a document

To unpublish a document, follow these steps:

  1. Open more-menu-icon the More menu from the top-left of the canvas.
  2. Click Publish.
  3. Under “Published Links”, click trash_icon_to_unpublish_a_lucid_document.png the trash can icon to the right of the link you want to unpublish.
    • You will need to repeat this step if you have multiple links to unpublish.
