Embed links and media in Lucid

Embed videos, images, and rich media

Lucid partners with Embedly so you can easily add engaging content to your Lucidchart documents and Lucidspark boards. Embedly supports over 700 providers including YouTube, Imgur, and Prezi. To see a complete list of all providers, visit Embedly’s website.

To embed a video, image, or other rich media:

1. Copy the public URL or share link of the content.
2. Open a Lucidchart document or Lucidspark board.
3. Paste the public URL or share link to generate an embedded link on the canvas.

Embed links

With embedded links in Lucidchart and Lucidspark, you can turn URLs from sources like Google Workspace, Microsoft OneDrive, Confluence, and Figma into thumbnails. These embedded links include the option to preview the thumbnail to edit or view the webpage within Lucid.

To embed a link:

1. Copy the URL of the page you want to embed.
   • If the page is from a non-public source such as Google Workspace or Microsoft OneDrive, be sure to use a shareable link.
2. Open a Lucidchart document or Lucidspark board.
3. Paste the URL into the Lucid document.
   • The first time you go through these steps, you may need to authorize Lucid to access the URL’s source.

This generates an embedded link thumbnail on the canvas.

Manage an embedded link

Adjust the size of an embedded link thumbnail by selecting the shape’s edge and dragging to resize. You can also use the resize function to adjust how the thumbnail’s image is cropped.

To access more thumbnail options in Lucidchart, select a thumbnail to open the embedded link block panel to the right of the workspace. In Lucidspark, select the thumbnail to open the shape’s context menu. Keep in mind some of these options may appear on the embedded link thumbnail itself.

Depending on the type of URL, you have the following options to manage and work with the embedded link:

• Preview the embedded link as a frame within the document or board to view or edit.
• Open the embedded link in a new tab.
• Refresh the thumbnail.
• Replace the thumbnail image with an uploaded image.
• Select an image to display on the thumbnail.
• Extract a thumbnail’s image to use as a shape on the canvas.
• Copy the source link in the embedded thumbnail.

The options to open the link in a new tab, refresh the source, replace the thumbnail image, and copy the source link are available for all embedded links. For details on whether a specific link type has the option to preview within the document, select a different thumbnail, or extract thumbnails, check out the table below.

Manage Lucid links

Embedded Lucidchart and Lucidspark links function similarly to other embedded links including most of the features listed in the section above. Unlike other links, however, Lucid links open fullscreen in Lucid by default. You still have the option in the context menu to preview them in an embedded frame if that is your preference.

Change the thumbnail for a Lucid document

You can change the thumbnail for any Lucid document. This thumbnail will appear as the document's preview image on the Lucid Home Page and on embedded Lucid documents. 

Set existing content as the thumbnail

Set the thumbnail of your Lucid document to be any content within the document by following these steps:

1. Select an object on the canvas.
   • Only one object can be selected. If you want multiple objects to be represented in the thumbnail, surround them with a container shape or Frame, then select the container shape or Frame.
2. Right-click the selection.
3. Select Set thumbnail.

The selected object is now the thumbnail for that document. You'll see it on the Lucid Home Page or when this document is embedded as a link in another Lucid document.

Add a custom thumbnail

Add a custom image from your device as the thumbnail for a document by following these steps:

1. Navigate to the Lucid Home Page.
2. Right-click the document you want to update the thumbnail for.
3. Hover your cursor over "Organize".
4. Select Change thumbnail.
5. Choose an image file from your device.
6. Click Save.

The uploaded image is now the thumbnail for that document. You'll see it on the Lucid Home Page or when this document is embedded as a link in another Lucid document.

FAQ

What types of URLs can I use to create an embedded link in my Lucid document?
Embedded links are currently supported for URLs from Lucid, Google Workspace, Microsoft OneDrive, Dropbox, Confluence, Figma, Box, and more. For a full list, visit Embedly’s website.  

Why can’t I edit content from an embedded link when I preview it within my Lucid document?
Previewing a link to edit the content within Lucid is only available for links from Lucid, Google Workspace, and Confluence.

Can I embed an MP4 file from my device in a Lucid document?
No. Lucid doesn't support uploading videos from your device. You can, however, embed videos from other sites such as YouTube and Loom.
