WebGL is a rendering technology for web-based applications that uses your device’s graphics hardware to render content faster. Using hardware-accelerated WebGL for Lucid’s products will almost always result in a better experience. In the rare case you experience WebGL issues in Lucid, use the information in this article to troubleshoot.

First steps

If a feature in the editor is not behaving as it normally does, or if objects on your canvas don’t appear as intended, try the options below prior to turning WebGL off.

Ensure WebGL is functional
Check the Lucid Diagnostic page to see whether WebGL is working on your browser. You will see a green check mark next to “WebGL Renderer” if it is working, and a red X if it isn’t.

Optimize your browser
WebGL resources are shared across all browser tabs, so it can fail due to other software interacting on your browser. Try closing unnecessary tabs and keeping your browser up-to-date to eliminate common temporary issues.

Restart your browser
You will see a warning message in the bottom-left corner of the editor if the WebGL context is never created or if it is lost mid-session. If the browser cannot provide an appropriate WebGL context, usually closing and restarting the web browser will fix the issue and allow for rendering with WebGL. In extreme cases, the device may need to be restarted entirely in order for rendering with the dedicated graphics hardware to start working again.

Check the availability of hardware acceleration

Some enterprise systems are set up so a device’s graphics hardware is never accessible. These devices will be unable to use WebGL and will always use the fall back rendering strategy. To check the availability of hardware acceleration using Chrome, follow these steps:

Enter “chrome://settings” in the browser’s navigation bar.
Click the System tab in the left panel.
Verify the “Use hardware acceleration when available” setting is toggled on.
- If this setting cannot be toggled on, we recommend contacting your organization’s IT department for assistance.
Enter “chrome://gpu” in the browser’s navigation bar.
Find the “Graphics Feature Status” section.
Find the provided status information of “WebGL” and “WebGL2”.
- If the status is anything other than “Hardware accelerated”, that means Chrome is unable to use the device’s graphics hardware and WebGL won’t work in Lucid products. We recommend contacting your organization’s IT department for assistance.

Turn off WebGL

If your hardware is incompatible with WebGL, you can turn off WebGL for your document session. Lucid’s products will still function using a Canvas2D renderer. Follow these steps to turn off WebGL:

In Lucidchart, select the View tab of the menu bar.
- In Lucidspark or Lucidscale, select the More menu or Model Options menu.
Hover your cursor over “Rendering”.
Uncheck the “Use WebGL” option.
